What are wisdom teeth?

Wisdom teeth also called the third molar are actually the four teeth at the end of each jaw. The wisdom tooth is usually growing about at the age of 17 to 19 years. People mostly have about 32 teeth. Sometimes there is not enough space for wisdom teeth to come through. Sometimes the wisdom tooth affects other teeth as they grow, causing problems.
There are various problems involving the growth of wisdom teeth such as occlusion under soft tissue or gum or sometimes under the gum. These causes may be originated from hereditary factors, congenital problems, some diseases and other reasons such as insufficient tooth space due to tooth size the tissue becomes hard (bone).

Wisdom tooth removal (Extraction)

The cause of extraction wisdom tooth

Wisdom tooth extraction is a special case of tooth removal. As mentioned, the last tooth on the two sides of the lower and upper jaws is the wisdom tooth. If it is visible in the mouth, it is simply extracted. But, in some cases there is not enough space in the mouth for the wisdom tooth to move into the right position. Thus, it might only break out partly, as a partially hidden or impacted tooth, or it cannot entirely break out, and just stays in the jaw at an angle, or just stays in the jaw horizontally or vertically, as a totally hidden or impacted tooth. In these positions, it can be surgically removed with special tools. A suitable treatment plan is adapted by our expert oral surgeons according to your personal needs.

Procedure of wisdom tooth extraction

Wisdom tooth extraction as a special case of tooth removing mostly requires more attention to be taken into account. Only if the wisdom tooth is completely erupted in the mouth, it could be removed with simple tooth extraction procedures. But in most situations, it is hardly reachable by the dentist or oral surgeon because of its positions, so it is rather advisable to do surgical tooth extraction procedures to remove it. There are four main positions of the wisdom tooth in the mouth that make the dentist or oral surgeon extracts it surgically. The first position is the “Partial Impacted” when the wisdom tooth can only partially break out from the gum, as its crown fouls under the crown of the adjacent tooth, and in this case, there is a very high risk of unnoticed caries in the root of the adjacent tooth. The “Angular Impacted” is the second position in which the wisdom tooth cannot break out from the gum, because its crown lays towards the root of the adjacent tooth, and in such case, it may even break the root of the adjacent tooth. The third position is the “Horizontal Impacted” when the wisdom tooth cannot break out from the gum, as its crown leans horizontally on the root of the adjacent tooth, and in this case, it is almost certain that it can only be removed in pieces. The “Vertical Impacted” is the fourth position in which the wisdom tooth cannot break out from the gum, because it is embedded vertically under the crown of the adjacent tooth, and in such case, the adjacent tooth is removed before the wisdom tooth.

How do you feel after wisdom tooth extraction?

After the simple or surgical tooth extraction, you may experience pain, discomfort or swelling in the affected area, depending on the complexity and difficulty of the tooth removing. There is no reason to worry as the symptoms normally disappear in a few days. However, if you have pain or swelling that is not going away after several days, or experience signs of an infection including fever, pain, and pus or drainage from the gap or incision, make an appointment with your dentist as soon as possible.
After the tooth extraction, you have to bite down on the gauze pad over the affected area to reduce bleeding and to aid in blood clot formation. It is better to leave the gauze on for three to four hours, or until the pad is soaked with blood. You should apply an ice pack to your cheek directly after the procedure for 10 minutes each time to reduce swelling, and should take any medications as prescribed including painkillers and antibiotics. Antibiotics are more likely to be given if you have infection, a weakened immune system, and specific medical conditions. It is recommended to rest and relax for the first 24 hours and use pillows to prop your head up when you lie down. You should also avoid rinsing your mouth for 24 hours after the tooth extraction, only spit gently, and avoid smoking for 72 hours.
