All you want to know about Inlay / Onlay treatment in Iran
Both types of Inlay and Onlay fillings are considered “indirect” fillings, meaning that they are fabricated outside the mouth (usually made by a dental laboratory) and then bonded to the tooth by the dentist. This is in contrast to “direct” fillings, which are applied directly to the cavity by the dentist.
Inlay and Onlay fillings can be made from two main different materials including composite or porcelain/ceramic. A suitable treatment plan is adjusted by our restorative specialists according to your personal needs.
How are Inlay and Onlay prepared in Iran?
The Inlay and Onlay fillings are made in a dental laboratory and designed to perfectly fit into the cavity/gap to ensure the area is completely sealed in order to preserve the tooth underneath. They can also protect the tooth from more invasive procedures such as root canal therapy and dental crown, by eliminating caries and infection in the affected surfaces of tooth. After the painless and conservative dental restoration, you can enjoy your natural tooth for the rest of your life with appropriate care.
Is there any need to numb for Inlay and Onlay procedure?
Preparing the damaged tooth is done under a local anesthesia. Your restorative specialist will remove caries and the damaged parts in the enamel and dentinal tissues with a small drill.

The treatment is completed with a polish to ensure a smooth and aesthetically pleasing finish.

Is there any need to temporary filling placement?
Until the new restoration is fabricated, a temporary filling is put on the prepared tooth.
Is Inlay/Onlay procedure painful?
You do not feel pain during the whole Inlay/Onlay procedure performed under local anesthesia by our expert specialists.
Is there any need to be followed up after dental Inlay/only?
You must have the follow-ups and the required dental hygiene care explained by your dental specialist. More x-rays might be taken during the follow-up visits to examine whether the filling is cracked or leaking, or decay is occurring under the filling.
How is the Inlay/Onlay procedure accomplished in Iran?
Getting an Inlay or Onlay is very much like what you would experience having a crown placed, with one important distinction that is less of your natural tooth structure will need to be removed by drilling in preparation to receive an Inlay or Onlay. We often recommend Inlay or Onlay instead of crown when a tooth can be restored with this more conservative type of treatment. In case of an Inlay, the damaged area of the tooth will be removed and the surrounding area prepared and cleaned for the restoration to be insert in the resulting gap. In case of an Onlay, the damage is to the surface of tooth and the affected area is removed to an extent where the restoration actually sits on the resulting gap rather than inside it. However, the procedure for placing an Inlay or Onlay is the same, and it takes two appointments for the Inlay and Onlay treatments to be completed and finally bonded to the damaged area of tooth.
What is the Onlay/ Inlay made from in Iran?
Inlays and Onlays are usually made from porcelain/ceramic, but they can also be made from composite resin or gold. Ceramic dental Inlay or Onlay is the most aesthetic solution, which often most closely matches the color and shade of the natural tooth. Each type of indirect filling has its own advantages and disadvantages, but this is something that you should discuss with your dentist.
Why is Inlay/Onlay filling in Iran suggested to us?
In case of large dental caries, Inlay or Onlay is better than a dental filling, as it is much more difficult to fix the simple filling safely in such a broad cavity, and almost impossible to protect the undamaged surface of tooth with the simple dental filling. In addition, injury may happen at the edge of filling (where the filling and the natural tooth meet), that can lead to secondary tooth decay. In case of extended dental caries, the area beneath the gum is also damaged, which makes it impossible to create the simple filling safely and it may also lead to secondary tooth decay. It should be mentioned that Inlays and Onlays weaken the tooth structure, but to a much lower extent than traditional dental fillings, and are more durable and last much longer than dental fillings. Exon provides you dental professional team committed to offer you the best quality and cutting-edge dental treatment including Inaly and Onlay filling.
How can Inlay/Onlay treatment be a successful treatment?
Although dental Inlay or Onlay can protect a tooth with moderate to severe decay or fracture from doing root canal therapy and dental crown, or from being extracted, you should keep in mind that good oral hygiene can significantly contribute to have the successful treatment. You can control and maintain your oral hygiene with use of a soft-bristle toothbrush, fluoridated toothpaste, dental floss, mouthwash and regular dental check-ups.
How long may I feel discomfort after Inlay and Onlay treatment?
After the Inlay or Onlay treatment, there will probably be a little discomfort and the new tooth surface may feel a little odd, but you get used to the new tooth surface soon and how it feels and looks in your mouth. The tissue around the treated tooth may feel sore or sensitive, but this should decrease in a couple of days. If you do feel some discomfort and sensitivity, you can take over-the-counter pain medications to relieve the symptoms.
