Corneal transplantation with the cutting-edge method in Iran

Corneal transplantation is a kind of advanced surgical process to replace corneal tissue. This operation is also known as corneal graft or Keratoplasty.
Corneal transplantation is one of the most advanced surgeries has been accomplished at the Farabi Eye hospital in Tehran. The patient's complain was sever dry eye and adhesion of eyelids to the corneal surface as well as keratinization of the corneal surface. The method was invented in the early 60s by Italian ophthalmic surgeon Professor Benedetto Strampelli, but due to the complexity of its operation, few centers in the world could perform it. According to Dr. Zarei Ghanavati, this surgery is operated in two stages, the first step is to remove the bite with some of the jawbones and cut it. Then a hole with a diameter of 3.5 to 4.5 mm is inserted into this cut, drilled and special optical cylinder. This piece is implanted under the lower eyelid for three months to form a vascular tissue around it. Besides, at this stage, the patient's cornea is covered with oral mucosal tissue.
