Description

• A dental bridge is a fixed dental prosthetic made of two or more crowns that are connected together and used as single, partial or complete restorations for replacement of one or more missing teeth (pontics) or severely broken, fractured, or damaged teeth that cannot hold dental crowns.

• In every case of missing teeth replacement, dental bridges must be supported by at least two points or anchoring teeth to ensure their stability. Generally, natural teeth act as anchoring or abutment teeth, but implants can also support the dental bridges.

• If only one tooth is missing, the two neighboring teeth can be used as abutment to support the single bridge. In this case, the middle unit of the three-unit bridge replaces the missing tooth, and the two adjacent units are placed on the prepared neighboring teeth for stability. If the majority or all of teeth are missing or if the teeth are aesthetically lacking, the partial or complete bridge can be applied as an ideal solution, and placed on the prepared neighboring teeth or implants.

• Dental bridges can be manufacture by different materials such as full porcelain (ceramic bridge), metal porcelain (porcelain-fused to metal bridge), and ceramic metal (zirconia bridge), according to the size of bridge. A suitable treatment plan is adjusted by our expert prosthodontists based on your number and type of teeth missed and type of materials used, to bridge the gap between natural teeth.

• Consultation and treatment plan: A comprehensive dental examination, a panoramic X-ray of mouth, and a personalized treatment plan are performed by your dental prosthetic specialist. You are explained by the specialist about the steps of the treatment and the possibilities in your specific case in terms of number and type of missing teeth and type of bridge in accordance with your needs and expectations.

• Teeth preparation and reduction: Reshaping the anchoring or abutment teeth is done under a local anesthesia. Your prosthodontist will prepare the neighboring teeth by removing their outer protective layers and trimming them to about half of their sizes which allows the placement of dental crowns, often results in root canal therapy of the teeth.

• Mouth impression: An impression of the trimmed, the missing and the surrounding teeth is taken by your dental prosthetic specialist.

• Temporary bridge placement: Until the new bridge is fabricated, a temporary bridge is put on the trimmed and missing teeth.

• Permanent bridge manufacture: Our laboratory will create the permanent bridge and perform any final adjustments.

• Permanent bridge fixation: Your prosthodontist will place the bridge permanently on the neighboring teeth and fix it with a special dental cement above the gum line. The missing teeth (pontics) are secured to the gum tissues to prevent bacterial invasion.

• Dental check-up: You must have the follow-ups and the required dental hygiene care explained by your dental specialist. More x-rays might be taken during the follow-up visits to examine how the bridge is fitted on the anchoring and missing teeth in terms of aesthetics, resistance, strength, durability, biocompatibility and function.

• You do not feel pain during the whole procedure performed under local anesthesia by our expert specialists.

• One or more missing teeth or severely broken, fractured, or damaged teeth that are not stable enough to hold dental crowns on their own

• Loss of one to four incisors, one canine, two premolars and the first molar, one or more molars

• Anchoring teeth with adequate quality that have sufficient remained surface areas and enough supporting enamel

• Anchoring teeth without any deformations, deviations or heavy restorations

• Aesthetic reasons to enhance appearance by replacing the missing teeth on both jaws

• Functional reasons to increase chewing ability by replacing the missing teeth on both jaws

• No metal allergy or sensitivity only with porcelain-fused-to-metal bridges

• Root canal therapy or gum disease treatment of the anchoring or missing teeth

• Appropriate level of oral hygiene care

• Based on the anchoring teeth used for supporting dental bridges, three kinds of traditional, cantilever, and Maryland bonded bridges applied to replace the missing or damaged teeth. Traditional bridges are supported by two reshaped neighboring teeth on either side of the gap. For cantilever bridges, only one reshaped neighboring tooth on one side of the gap is used to support the bridge. This procedure cannot be performed for the back teeth, as the bridge will be damaged and collapsed under pressure. In Maryland bonded bridges, the missing tooth is fused to metal wings with resin to cause minimal damage to reshaped neighboring teeth. This procedure can be used for the front teeth, as biting force is less strong.

• According to the materials used for constructing dental bridges, full porcelain (ceramic) bridge, metal porcelain or porcelain-fused-to-metal (PFM) bridge and ceramic metal (zirconia) bridge are the three main types of dental bridges used for replacing the missing or damaged teeth. Each type of bridge has its own advantages and disadvantages, but this is something that you should discuss with your dentist.

• The number and type of your missing or damaged teeth determines the choice of materials used for fabricating dental bridges. All-porcelain bridge can only be used for replacement of up to 3 elements, as the stability and resistance of the bridge cannot guarantee more than 3 elements. If 4 elements are required, it is essential to select either a porcelain-fused-to-metal bridge or a zirconia bridge, considering that the zirconia bridge is more aesthetic and durable with longer guarantee and no risk of allergic reaction. For the front teeth, where aesthetics is primary concern, the use of all-porcelain bridge is a reasonable choice. The certainty of best selection for replacement of missing or damaged teeth in your personal case should be professionally advised by your dentist.
