Procedures

The surgery steps are similar between traditional cataract surgery and laser cataract surgery. The difference is in the instruments that are used during the operation. Generally, the steps are as follows:

• Making an incision at the junction of cornea and sclera based on the eye’s 3D image that is directing the laser

• Removing the anterior part of the lens capsule to access the lens using laser

• Softening the affected lens with laser

• Applying ultrasonic waves to the lens to break it to small segments

• Suctioning the broken pieces of lens

• Inserting the artificial lens

In the traditional method, a metal or diamond blade is used instead of the laser.

The artificial lens, known also as an intraocular lens (IOL), has several types. The surgeon chooses the most suitable type based on the patient’s conditions and needs. Some types of lenses are more used and available including:

• Fixed-focus monofocal: monofocal means that the lens has only on focus strength. Fixed-focus means that the focus can’t change. So, the lens can work for a certain distance and eyeglasses are required for activities such as reading.

• Accommodating-focus monofocal: like the last item, these lenses have one focus strength as well. However, accommodating- focus means that the focus can change on near and far objects according to movements of eye muscles.

• Multifocal: multi means several. Therefore, these lenses have different focusing strength in different areas which provides you with vision in near, medium and far distances, similar to progressive lenses or bifocal eyeglasses.

• Astigmatism correction (toric): the toric lens is a choice for you if you have severe astigmatism.

Cataract surgery is one of the safest and most performed surgeries in the world. You may feel discomfort and itching for a few days after the surgery which will subside gradually. During this period don’t rub or push your eye. The complications are rare and treatable. However, if an underlying condition has caused the cataract, the risk of developing complications is higher. The complications are as follows:

• Infection and inflammation

• Bleeding

• Eyelid drooping

• Other eye conditions such as glaucoma and retinal detachment

You may be required to use eyeglasses after the procedure. It is strongly recommended to get the final eye prescription after the complete healing which could be 1 to 3 months after the surgery.

Using femtosecond laser has these benefits over the traditional method:

• The corneal incision is much more precise which leads to faster self-healing of the incision and fewer complications.

• The probability of damage to the posterior lens capsule decreases (the capsule is responsible for holding the lens in its place)
