Description

DCR is a surgical approach for blocked or narrowed tear ducts. The tear in our eyes drains from small holes at the inner corner of the eye into the tear sac. Then the tear runs to the nasolacrimal duct that drains the tear into the nose. Tear duct blockage leads to watery and steaky eyes. To drain the accumulated tears, a new passage is made to bypass the blockage and drain the tears from the tear sac to the nose.

The causes of a blocked tear duct may include:

Before stepping in the surgical process, you should do some examinations including radiography and EKG. The operation is done under general anesthesia. Through a small incision under the lower eyelid, a passage is made to connect the lacrimal sac to the nose. The surgeon may use a stent which is a small tube to keep the passageway open until full recovery.

DCR is not a method of choice for everyone with blocked tear ducts. It is commonly performed on adults rather than children. First, you will be recommended to alleviate the situation by massaging, warm compresses, antibiotics in the case of infection and dilation of the nasolacrimal duct. However, if the blockage doesn’t respond to these methods, DCR may be required.

Types of procedures:

External DCR: This approach is the most common surgery for the treatment of blocked tear ducts with a success rate of 90%. In this method, an incision is made at the side of the eye and a small piece of bone is removed. Then a passage is created to pass the tears to the nos. The passage will be kept open using flexible tubes which will be removed after 6 to 8 weeks.

Endoscopic DCR: In this method, a telescope is used to locate the blockage site up the nose. Then the blockage is opened through surgery. Like external DCR, a stent is used to keep the dust open which will be removed after 6 to 8 weeks. The advantage of endoscopic DCR is that it leaves no scar on the face. however, the success rate is 70% in this method which is lower than external DCR.
