The KAMRA corneal inlay is an approach to correct presbyopia, this procedure can eliminate the patient's need for glasses.
The inlay is a mini-ring with a pinhole in the center, which is smaller and thinner than a contact lens. The opening only passes the focused light. The KAMRA is only placed in one eye and the other eye is untouched. The KAMRA inlay and the untreated eye work together to provide near and far vision while maintaining the distance.
The lens is positioned behind the iris and is responsible for focusing the light onto the retina to provide vision. In younger ages, the lens is soft and flexible and easily changes its shape. In middle to old ages (after 40 years old), the lens may lose their elasticity which will lead to farsightedness. This condition is known as presbyopia (“old eye” in Greek). it is also irreversible but correctable through these three ways:
•Surgery (Kamra corneal inlay)
Symptoms of Presbyopia:
-Eyestrain and headaches after reading
-Bothersome reading the small print letters
-Exhaustion after doing close work
-Needing more light for reading and close works
-Increasing the distance of reading materials from your eyes to improve focus
You may develop presbyopia prematurely if you have:
-Blood sugar metabolizing diseases such as diabetes
-Farsightedness in which seeing near objects is more difficult than far objects.
-multiple sclerosis (MS) affecting the spine and brain
To achieve the best results, it is recommended to:
•Refrain from wearing reading glasses
•Take the prescribed medications and use artificial tears
•Make appointments for follow-up sessions
Your vision may fluctuate during the first 3 to 6 months after the operation. The fluctuations are the sign of brain adaptation to the new vision and will stabilize gradually. You should follow your doctor’s instructions diligently to have a proper recovery and gain the best results.
The inlay is made of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) in the shape of a porous disk. In addition, carbon nano-particles are used as pigments to make it opaque. Its dimensions are as follows:
•Inside Diameter: 1.6 mm
•Outside Diameter: 3.8 mm
•Spherical Radius: 7.5 mm
•Thickness: 6 microns
- It is notable that Individual leaflets based on the patient/client plan will be offered to you including instructions before and after procedure and also for upcoming follow-up. During your staying in Iran, you will be fully supported by Exon English and Arabic translation team, who will be happy to assist with any concerns or queries that arise.
This surgery may conclude some potential risks just like any other surgery. This may include:
•Glared vision and halos
•Blurry and cloudy vision
•Eye dryness which can be addressed using artificial tears
If the symptoms persist, they could be improved by repositioning the punctal plug or inlay removal.
