Description

The KAMRA corneal inlay is an approach to correct presbyopia, this procedure can eliminate the patient's need for glasses.

The inlay is a mini-ring with a pinhole in the center, which is smaller and thinner than a contact lens. The opening only passes the focused light. The KAMRA is only placed in one eye and the other eye is untouched. The KAMRA inlay and the untreated eye work together to provide near and far vision while maintaining the distance.

The lens is positioned behind the iris and is responsible for focusing the light onto the retina to provide vision. In younger ages, the lens is soft and flexible and easily changes its shape. In middle to old ages (after 40 years old), the lens may lose their elasticity which will lead to farsightedness. This condition is known as presbyopia (“old eye” in Greek). it is also irreversible but correctable through these three ways:

• Eyeglasses

• Contact lenses

Symptoms of Presbyopia:

Prior to surgery, your ophthalmologist will accomplish a comprehensive exam on your eyes. During the surgery you will experience the following steps:

- Your eye will be numbed by dropping anesthetics to prevent pain.

- Your eye will be kept open using an eye-holder during the procedure.

- Your pupils will be dilated using special drops.

- Your surgeon will mark the center of your pupil using a special pen.

- A small pocket will be created in your cornea by femtosecond laser.

- The KAMRA is placed inside the corneal pocket under the microscope. The center of the ring is aligned with the center of the pupil which is marked in previous stages.

• Take the prescribed medications and use artificial tears

• Make appointments for follow-up sessions

Your vision may fluctuate during the first 3 to 6 months after the operation. The fluctuations are the sign of brain adaptation to the new vision and will stabilize gradually. You should follow your doctor’s instructions diligently to have a proper recovery and gain the best results.

The inlay is made of polyvinylidene difluoride (PVDF) in the shape of a porous disk. In addition, carbon nano-particles are used as pigments to make it opaque. Its dimensions are as follows:
