PRK (Photorefractive Keratectomy) is surgery for correcting refractive issues. In this surgery, an excimer laser is used to change the shape of the cornea. PRK can improve the vision in cases of mild to moderate farsightedness, nearsightedness, and astigmatism. This method is of high accuracy and most people who undergo this surgery for nearsightedness gain 20/20 vision after 3 to 6 months.
Refractive errors can be corrected through 4 methods:
•FEMTO Second LASIK
•Implantation of Phakic intraocular lens (IOL) for patients with extreme myopia.
The difference between PRK and LASIK is in the procedure steps. In LASIK a flap is created in the corneal tissue before using the laser. However, PRK preserves more corneal tissue and makes it possible for more patients to benefit from laser vision correction. In general, it is a very safe and effective method.
