Thigh lift surgery is a procedure for removing loose skin and localized fat from inner and outer thigh. This surgery is also known as “thighplasty”. The operation results in a more toned, smoother and firmer appearance.

Losing significant amounts of weight, aging or heredity may cause sagging of thigh’s skin. In addition to creating an unpleasant appearance the loss skin may restrict your movements. Moreover, cellulites may not respond to dieting and exercise therefore another target for this surgery is the stubborn fat stores in thighs. The surgeon may use one of the following methods for thigh lifting based on your needs:

1. Medial thigh lift: this surgery is performed by making a horizontal incision on the upper inner thigh and removing excess fat and skin to achieve a firmer look.

2. Standard thigh lift: in this surgery, the surgeon makes horizontal and vertical incisions to remove the loose skin and excess fat after significant weight loss. In this way, the surgeon reshapes the thigh and it looks toned and contoured.

The procedure takes 2 to 4 hours and performed through these steps:

1. You will go under general anesthesia.

2. The incisions are made. The surgeon may use 4 different incision types.

• Vertical incisions are made along the inner or outer thigh. The length of the incision may be as long as the distance between the hip and the knee.

• Medial thigh lifts the incisions are under buttocks.

• Another modification of medial incision called minimal incision may be used as well. In this technique, the incisions are made along the groins.

• Outer incision which is made along the underwear line to the top of the outer thigh in a V shape.

3. Your surgeon will close the incisions. The surgeon may use a drainage tube to drain the blood and fluid to prevent swelling.

You should at least take 3 weeks off work until your incisions heal completely. However, you can resume your daily routine that doesn’t include strenuous activities after one week. Furthermore, you won’t be able to drive at least for 5 days after surgery and it is recommended to avoid driving for 2 weeks after surgery. Most of the swelling will be gone at the first two weeks and after 6 to 8 weeks you can see the final result of the surgery. However, for some people it takes a whole year for the swelling to completely disappear.

Like other surgeries, thigh lift carries some risks including:

• Fluid accumulation under the skin

• Swelling and bruising which gradually disappear

• Tissue death (necrosis) due to lack of blood supply (the risk increases significantly if you are a smoker)

• Damage to sensory nerve and temporary numbness

• Asymmetry in the appearance of the thighs
